SYDNEY, Sept 24 (AFP) - Szymon Ziolkowski won the men's Olympic hammer gold medal for Poland Sunday despite leaving his shoes back in the Athletes' village.

A throw of 80.02m helped Ziolkowski take gold ahead of Italy's silver medallist Nicola Vizzoni and bronze medallist Igor Astapkovich who finished with the bronze.

"I left my proper shoes at the village and that's why my first throw (74.89m) was a prudent one," said Ziolkowski.
