Disaster for Britain in sprint relay
SYDNEY, Sept 29 (AFP) - Britain's men's sprint relay teams, one of the favourites for gold, crashed out of the event in the first-round stage here on Friday in embarrassing style. They finished eighth and last in their heat, behind the likes of Guatamala and India and were then told they were dissqualified for a faulty changeover. The British relay squad had taken great pride in having worked together as a team for three years, and at last year's World Championships in Seville, had won the silver medal behind the mighty United States. Here, though, it was problems all the way for the British. The quartet of Allyn Condon, Jason Gardener, Marlon Devonish and Dwain Chambers got off to a poor start, with a hesitant first changeover. With both Gardener and Devonish being seriously below par in their individual events, neither was able to make up any of the early deficit on their leg. And any hopes the British had of salvaging anything from the dire situation disappeared, when Chambers had to come to a rapid stop before he received the baton from Devonish. "What can I say, man?" Chambers, the fourth placer in the individual 100m last Saturday said. "It's all over. I'm gutted. I knew from the first changeover that we were in trouble.
