Kenteris pulls off stunning upset for sprint gold
SYDNEY, Sept 28 (AFP) - Greece's Konstantinos Kenteris pulled off a stunning upset victory when he took the men's 200 meter Olympic title here on Thursday. The 27-year-old powered home in 20.09secs, heading Britain's Darren Campbell and Trinidad's Ato Boldon. The American sprint duo of Coby Miller and John Capel, one of the favourites, trailed home in seventh and eighth spot. Kenterbis looked stunned and then surprised as he flashed across the line before grabbing his national flag from a spectator and going on a lap of honour. Campbell simply collapsed on the track and sobbed - apparently with joy. It was nearly five minutes before he clambered to his feet and went over to his coach, former Olympic champion Linford Christie, and hugged him. For Boldon, the 26-year-old walked around the edge of the track in stunned disbelief. He had been strongly tipped to take the gold, especially with the absence of Maurice Greene and world record holder and defending champion Michael Johnson. Both failed to make the US 200m team, pulling out with injuries in the trials. Instead he squeezed home with a bronze and he made no attempt to hide his disgust at himself. Miller and Capel stood side-by-side, trying to work out how it all went so horribly wrong, before they trailed off to the changing room.
