Russian athlete tests positive for steroid
SYDNEY, Sept 30 (AFP) - Russian 400m runner Svetlana Pospelova is under investigation after testing positive for the banned steroid stanozolol, International Olympic Committee (IOC) medical commission chief Alexandre de Merode said Saturday. Pospelova, who has already left the Sydney Games, failed a random test taken a few days after finishing competing. "We are proceeding with the necessary inquiries," de Merode told reporters. The IOC said Pospelova, who did not progress beyond the 400m heats and was not picked for Russia's 4x400m relay team, had yet to be informed of the positive test. "The athlete took part in one competition and had a test afterwards, but some days afterwards, and then left because the team estimated that she was not well enough qualified," de Merode said. Stanozolol is the same substance for which Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson tested positive in the 1988 Games in Seoul where he was stripped of the Gold he had won in the 100m.
