Packing for Boston

One of the most recognizable soccer players in America, Cobi Jones was named U.S. Soccer's player of the year in 1998. He was also a finalist for the 1998 MVP award in Major League Soccer. Jones and the Los Angeles Galaxy will play D.C. United on Sunday in MLS Cup '99. As he prepares for the league's championship game, Jones is filing an MLS Cup diary for CNNSI.com.
Tuesday, November 16, 1999 This has been a long season, but today we received some good news. Sigi Schmid was named All Sport Coach of the Year, and Kevin Hartman was named Pepsi Goalkeeper of the Year. I tell you what, we may not be in the position that we are in if it were not for those two guys playing such a large role on our team. Let's hope that positive news is only the beginning of more to come this week. I am actually getting a little antsy. The game can't come soon enough! We are five days away from what we have been working for the past nine months, an opportunity to return to the MLS Championship game and bring the Cup to Los Angeles. The team has been training extremely hard the last couple of days following our 3-1 victory over Dallas in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals. It was a hard-fought, three-game series that came down to the final match, but we were able to bounce back from the Game 2 loss at Dallas and put together a solid 90 minutes of soccer. We had an opportunity to watch D.C.'s game versus the Crew at RFK on Saturday at the FOX Sports Sky Box at the STAPLES Center along with over 1,000 fans. It was an impressive showing to say the least by both D.C. and the fans. United played a good game after having been beat 5-1 a week earlier at Columbus. They were also up against the wall, having had the series tied at 1-1, but demonstrated why they are in the title game for the fourth consecutive year. They, like us a few days earlier, showed the character of a champion on the field. Enough about D.C. and the Galaxy! I have to go home now a make some phone calls and pack for the trip. The team leaves tomorrow en route to Boston where the temperature is hovering in the 40s from what I hear. Hopefully there won't be a monsoon moving to Beantown on game day. Well, it is time to go for now. Stay tuned in to what will hopefully be a magical ride to the MLS Cup and a championship. By the way, if you live anywhere near Boston, I expect to see you at Foxboro cheering the Galaxy on! -- Cobi
