BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) -- With two goals apiece Wednesday, striker Edilson and defender Juan led Flamengo to a 4-0 victory over Argentina's Independiente, assuring itself a semifinal berth in the Copa Mercosur.

In a game completely dominated by the Brazilians, Edilson opened the scoring in the 23rd minute after receiving a pass from midfielder Petkovic, who seconds earlier successfully outmaneuvered three Argentine defenders.

One minute later, Petkovic again gained possession during a Flamengo counterattack and passed it to defender Juan, who scored easily.

In the 34th minute, Juan headed the ball into the net off a corner kick by Petkovic.

About 20 minutes into the second half, striker Reinaldo and defender Alessandro controlled the ball before Edilson scored the last goal of the game in the 67th minute.

Corinthians 2, Universidad Catolica 0

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Corinthians, needing to win by two goals to qualify for the semifinals of the Copa Mercosur, downed Chile's Universidad Catolica 2-0.

Corinthians entered Wednesday's match determined to score early, but the visitors' tight defense and a few excellent saves by goalie Jonny Walker resulted in a scoreless first half.

The home team returned more eager in the second half and in the 59th minute, midfielder Deivid opened the scoring after heading the ball home off a pass from striker Gil.

In the 72nd minute, Gil dribbled past two Chilean players and sent the ball to Leonardo. The striker then tapped it over to defender Kleber, who smashed into the net to make it 2-0.

Lineups:

Corinthians: Doni, Fabinho, Scheidt, Batata, Kleber, Otacilio (Luciano Ratinho, 46th), Rogerio, Ricardinho, Deivid, Gil (Rodrigo Pontes, 78th), Luizao (Leandro, 21st).

Universidad Catolica: Walker, Quiroz, Poli, Ramirez, Ponce, Acuna (Diaz, 77th) Segovia, Valdebenito (Villagra, 46th), Ormazabal, Perez (Gonzalez, 52nd), Norambuena.
