LIVERPOOL, England (AP) -- Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has been released from hospital, less than three weeks after undergoing life-saving heart surgery.

The 54-year-old Frenchman was discharged Thursday evening from Broadgreen Hospital after making a "remarkable" recovery, doctors said Friday.

Houllier was rushed to hospital after suffering chest pains at halftime of Liverpool's home game against Leeds on Oct. 13. He underwent an emergency 11-hour operation for dissection of the aorta.

In a statement Friday, the hospital quoted cardiac surgeon Abbas Rashid as saying Houllier's progress has been nothing less than "remarkable" given the complexities associated with the procedure.

"Obviously Mr. Houllier requires a period of convalescence and his progress will be monitored."

Houllier's assistant, Phil Thompson, has been in charge of the team in his absence, guiding Liverpool to four victories and a draw and a spot in the second phase of the European Champions League.

"I like to think that the results we've had since he went into hospital have helped him," Thompson said. "If results had been going the wrong way he may have wanted to come back much quicker!"

The club has said Houllier could return to work in two months.

Houllier will not attend Liverpool's showdown with Manchester United on Sunday at Anfield. He is due to spend several weeks of recuperation before returning to the hospital for further tests.

"It is absolutely fantastic news that Gerard came out of hospital last night," Thompson said. "It shows his improvement and his rehabilitation is coming along really well -- we are all really pleased.

"It's a great boost for everyone ahead of the Manchester United game. It's a remarkable recovery but knowing the man, that doesn't surprise me. I know what a tough fighting man he is and that all helps his recuperation."
