PASADENA, Calif. (AP) -- Paul Caligiuri scored in the 63rd minute to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 1-1 tie with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars on Sunday night in the first round of the MLS playoffs.

Both teams earned a point. In the MLS playoff system, the first team to five points wins the three-game series. Three points are awarded for a victory and one for a tie.

Caligiuri scored off Simon Elliott's corner kick. Adam Frye headed the ball at the left post to Caligiuri, who headed it inside the right post.

New York/New Jersey's Rodrigo Faria scored the first goal in the 29th minute. Faria took a pass from Adolfo Valencia on a counterattack, beat defender Ezra Hendrickson and fired a 21-yard shot inside the right post.

After scoring, Faria raised his jersey to reveal a white T-shirt with "Just Peace" written in black marker.

MetroStars goalkeeper Tim Howard played despite cutting his left pinky toe Wednesday.

New York/New Jersey played with 10 men for the final 35 minutes after Gilmar was ejected in the 65th minute. Caligiuri also received a red card in the 82nd minute.

Forward Luis Hernandez, who leads the Galaxy with eight goals, did not start because of an injured hip muscle. He replaced Sasha Victorine in the 59th minute.

Before the game, players entered the field in alternating order, instead of with their teams. Then they posed for a group picture as a sign of unity following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The attendance of 11,580 was the second-smallest for an MLS playoff game at the Rose Bowl.
