SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- South Korea switched on what it said was the world's highest fountain Tuesday as part of a campaign to promote the 2002 World Cup soccer tournament.

The fountain in front of the World Cup stadium in Seoul is located on Han River, which bisects the city. It can reach as high as 202 meters (673 feet), said the Seoul Metropolitan Government. The next biggest fountain, in Fountain Hills, Arizona, reaches as high as 170 meters (566 feet), South Korean officials said.

Seoul Mayor Koh Kun and 20 government officials switched on the fountain in a ceremony. Water shot out of a dome that is surrounded by 21 smaller fountains. It cost 7.7 billion won (dlrs 5 million).

As co-hosts, South Korea and Japan will hold the World Cup from May 31 to June 30. A total of 64 matches, split evenly between the two countries, will be played in 10 different stadiums in each country.
