Pavel-ous Bure on pace to set record for highest percentage of goals
By Jacob Luft, CNNSI.com Pavel Bure is the only reason to watch the woeful Panthers. It's too bad for Florida that Bure's teammates seem to be doing as much watching as the fans. Bure's 55 goals through March 20 account for 30.4 percent of the club's total, putting him on pace to break the NHL record of 27.7 set by St. Louis' Brett Hull in 1990-91. Only four players in NHL history have scored 25 percent or more of a team's goals in a single season, with Hull doing it twice (see chart, below). None of these teams won the Stanley Cup or reached the finals, but Bure's Panthers will be only the second club to miss the playoffs, along with Teemu Selanne's 1997-98 Mighty Ducks. The only player remotely close to Bure's 30.4-percent clip this season is Washington's Peter Bondra, who has scored 20.7 percent of the Capitals' goals (43 of 208). Colorado has two players among the league leaders -- Joe Sakic (17.7 percent) and Milan Hejduk (16.1). Bure, the NHL's only 50-goal scorer two years running, leads the league in shots on goal with 350. The Panthers' No. 2 scorer, Viktor Kozlov, who has taken less than half as many shots -- 137.
