Well rounded Kuerten no longer just clay court specialistPosted: Saturday May 27, 2000 01:17 PM
By Pedro Pinto, CNNSI.com Some call him the king of clay, and there is no doubt that Gustavo Kuerten is deadly on that surface. But the Brazilian has been improving his overall game, and his current ranking proves that. He is second in the ATP Champions Race and can go to No. 1 with a title at the French Open. Guga, as he is known in Brazil, looked to be in great form as he practiced on court No. 4 at Roland Garros. With his free-flowing hair, Kuerten says he is like Samson, getting power from his high-lighted locks. "I may not be too strong, but I feel strong," he said with a huge smile. One thing is certain, his game has been very solid indeed. Kuerten made the final of the last two Masters Series events, winning the Hamburg Open last weekend and has compiled a 27-10 record this season. Of course he knows how it feels to win on the red clay of Paris. Kuerten became the first Brazilian ever to win a grand slam tournament when he captured the trophy back in 1997. He outlasted two-time defending champion Sergi Bruguera. On Saturday, Kuerten had another sport on his mind -- Football. His beloved canaries, the Brazilian national team, were taking on England at Wembley. After talking to us, he rushed out in order not to miss a single minute of the match. Just like all the Brazilian fans in Roland Garros will not miss a moment of his.
