PARIS (Reuters) -- American teen-ager Andy Roddick recorded his first victory at a Grand Slam tournament when he defeated Australian Scott Draper 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 in the French Open first round on Monday.

It was the 18-year-old's 11th successive clay court victory after his tournament wins at Atlanta and Houston and set up a second round meeting with 1989 French Open champion and compatriot Michael Chang.

"That was one of my first memories in tennis, watching him [Chang] when he was 17 in 1989 when he was cramping against [Ivan] Lendl in the quarters, serving underhanded," said Roddick.

"I think everybody remembers that. It is pretty amazing. It really sparked an interest for me," added last year's junior world No. 1.

Roddick, who also beat Pete Sampras in Miami this year, lost to Spain's Albert Costa in the first round of the 2000 U.S. Open when he was a wild card entrant.
