PARIS (Reuters) -- Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario threw down her racket in frustration after seeing her bid for a fourth French Open crown crumble with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat to Amy Frazier on Thursday.

The 29-year-old Spaniard, champion in 1989, 1994 and 1998, was whistled off court for her trouble as she fell just short of a brave comeback from 2-5 down in the final set.

"I threw the racket because I was just so disappointed," said Sanchez-Vicario, whose defeat means there will be a new women's champion at Roland Garros this year.

"Maybe the crowd didn't like it. They can't understand that us players have feelings, too."

Sanchez-Vicario, who said she would be back next year, put her defeat down to a loss of concentration after a great start to the match.

"I'm sad at not being in the tournament any more," she said. "I was very solid in the first set but then I relaxed and made mistakes I shouldn't have.

"I don't remember the last time I broke a racket but it was after all the tension of the game."

Frazier, who in nine previous French Open campaigns had only reached the third round once, said the victory was one of the best of her career.

"Beating Arantxa at any time is great but to do it on clay makes me very happy," said the 28-year-old Frazier, ranked No. 24 in the world.

"It's definitely a highlight.

"I don't think she played anything like as well as she can. she made more unforced errors than she normally would."
