PARIS (Reuters) -- Spanish fourth seed Juan Carlos Ferrero cruised into the French Open quarterfinals on Sunday with a smooth 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Thomas Enqvist.

Ferrero, striking the ball from the back of the court with his customary panache, had far too much claycourt expertise for the 14th-seeded Swede, who had reached the fourth round at Roland Garros for the first time.

The 21-year-old Ferrero, who has won three titles on clay already this season, has dropped just one set on his way to the last eight.

He insisted, however, that he had not played particularly well against Enqvist.

"Today wasn't a day to play brilliantly," said Ferrero, who next faces Australian sixth seed Lleyton Hewitt or unseeded Argentine Guillermo Canas.

"It was windy out there and it was important to be effective rather than brilliant," he added. "I didn't make too many mistakes and he made more unforced errors than I had expected.

"But it was important to me not to suffer any lapse. I've been working on that recently so I was pleased with the way I maintained my concentration."

Sunday's victory over Enqvist was Ferrero's first match on Centre Court since his semifinal defeat by Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten 12 months ago.

A rematch is on the cards this year, if both win their quarterfinals, though Ferrero is not looking that far ahead.

"It felt good to be out on Centre Court again," the Spaniard said. "The court is beautiful and it's always a pleasure to play there.

"It does bother me that people are always talking about a match against Kuerten again.

"Kuerten was in difficulty today and I've had a four-set match. You have to have respect for our opponents, who are all good players."
