CNN/Sports Illustrated Studio Tour - Control Room

Control room or bridge -- where
the magic happens |

Fred Hickman and Bob Lorenz
-- almost life-like |
It looks so simple on TV. Fred Hickman and Bob Lorenz sit on the news room set, introduce video and tell you what's going on in the world of sports. But what really makes it all happen depends on some key people who are sitting in the control room.
It's kind of like the bridge of the Enterprise. And sitting in the captain's chair is the director . He makes technical decisions resulting in how the show looks on air.

The director is all powerful |

With a rundown in front of them and producers sitting behind them, the director calls the shots. They keep everyone aware of what is coming up next. They tell the font operator when to put a name or location on the screen and the audio operator which voice should be heard. Camera shots, audio, video, font, and graphics flow through the director.
The studio cameras are run robotically with an operator in the control room moving a small joystick to pan left or right. The camera operator runs all three cameras in the Atlanta studio. He also controls the studio camera that is in Sports Illustrated's New York newsroom as well. This camera is designated for breaking news, analysis and commentary by our SI folks.
