Chat Reel: Randall Godfrey

Titans LB likes Baltimore to win the Super Bowl

Randall Godfrey Randall Godfrey: "I think we're gonna try to keep the team together, especially finishing first in total defense." Scott Halleran/Allsport

CNNSI Host: Welcome to today's chat with Titans LB Randall Godfrey. Welcome Randall!
Randall Godfrey: Thanks for having me

From DawgFan: How did growing up in a football town like Valdosta prepare you for the NFL?
Randall Godfrey: It definitely helped me out playing against the best talent. There's definitely a tradition down here.

From Fidel Fernandez in Puebla, Pue Mexico: Who do you think is the most important free agent the Titans need to keep next season?
Randall Godfrey: First of all, we need to hang on to Kenny Holmes. He was hurt some, but he played really well for us. Derrick Mason is another guy who made a lot of plays for us. It's important for us to keep guys like Derrick and Kenny around.

From Jason Fagan in Elizabethton, Tenn.: I was a wondering since you have played against both teams, and they both have hard hitting defenses, do you thank the Giants can even score?
Randall Godfrey: I think it's going to be another great game. Both defenses are great, but I think Baltimore is going to win the game. Ray Lewis is healthy and the way he's played gives Baltimore a big edge.

From a guest in Fairfax, Va.: What was the key to the loss last week? What should the Titans have done differently?
Randall Godfrey: When we were down in the red zone, we should have scored several times. Any time you hold a team to six first downs and 140 total yards, you should win the game. But sometimes that happens. They also blocked two punts, which was big.

From Larrell Floyd: What do you think the future of the Titans defense will hold with some key free-agents like Samari Rolle and Kenny Holmes? Are they looking to come back or what is your take on this situation?
Randall Godfrey: I think we're gonna try to keep the team together, especially finishing first in total defense. I think the coaches and the general manager will try to keep us intact with the talent we have.

From Darren in Rockland County, N.Y.: How heartbreaking was it to watch a team like the Ravens, whom you know your team is better than, walk out of Adelphia with your win? How much are you and the rest of the Titans looking forward to next seasons first matchup against them? And finally, do you miss playing in Dallas?
Randall Godfrey: That game is definitely marked on our schedule. We dominated them statistically, but it just didn't work out for us. And to lose in our house was disappointing. I don't miss Dallas, as far as the city. I was there for four years and miss a lot of friends that I hung out with down there.

CNNSI Host: From kenv: Compare your relationship with your teammates on the Titans with your teammates in Dallas.
Randall Godfrey: It's pretty similar. Most teams have good guys who are very respectful toward others. There's really no difference. Both teams have really good players and really good guys.

From Derek in Lexington, Ky.: Congratulations on a great season, I know it ended sudden, and too soon, but you played a major part of the Titans' defense this year. How has Jeff Fisher handled the divisional loss with the team?
Randall Godfrey: He just told us to go home, think about it and then put it behind us. He told us to have a great offseason, get ready to come back and put ourselves in a position to claim home-field advantage, like we did this year. The biggest thing is just trying to score points and put away teams when we have the chance.

From Paul Solano in New York, N.Y.: Randall, I was in the Bahamas with you this past summer. We were both on that boat tour that took us to the bottom of the ocean with those masks on our heads. What do you think the Titans will need to do to improve on this season and make it to the Super Bowl? Is a big time receiver on your wish list this off season?
Randall Godfrey: We did have fun in the Bahamas (laughs). I think we're going to try to get a big-time receiver, maybe from the draft. I'm sure Floyd Reese will try to do his best to get the best talent.

From CTDawg: Randall: What's your take on UGA hiring Richt as head coach?
Randall Godfrey: I think it's a great decision to hire him. I was hoping Quincy Carter would stay and school and Richt could help him develop. But Richt did a great job at Florida State and being around Bobby Bowden, I think he's a great coach for Georgia to hire. I'm looking forward to next season

From catpower: Should college players be required to stay in school?
Randall Godfrey: I think if a player is talented enough and ready for the NFL, I don't see why he would go back to school and risk getting injured. I don't encourage kids to leave school early, but I don't tell them to necessarily stay, either. Some guys, get hurt, miss a chance to make a lot of money and that's it.

From randall: How do you fell about the minority coaching situation in the league?
Randall Godfrey: I really think there should be more and I think it's going to start happen. It was good to see guys in the playoffs like Dennis Green and Tony Dungy. It's good for the players and will definitely help the league.

From DawgFan: How difficult was the transition from the Dallas to Tennessee defense?
Randall Godfrey: It was a big transition. Our defense here was very aggressive, compared to the one in Dallas. In Tennessee, we've got a lot of speed, a lot of fast players and a lot of talent. The one in Dallas was good, but compared to here it's a big difference.

From Mark B. in Oklahoma: Do the Titans plan to address the down-field passing game in the offseason? The weapons are there (McNair, Thigpen, Dyson, etc) but the play-calling is not. Good luck and have a great off-season!
Randall Godfrey: I'm sure they will. The offensive coordinator was in his first season and I'm sure they're going to work on that. I'm pretty sure the offense will get better. They were learning a new scheme and the offensive coordinator and players were learning each other.

From DawgFan: Which coach at UGA helped you to become an NFL linebacker?
Randall Godfrey: Frank Orgell, my linebackers coach, enabled me to be a good player and fortunately, I was on the field as a freshman.

CNNSI Host: That's all the time we have today with Randall Godfrey. Thanks for joining us.
Randall Godfrey: Thank you. Please make sure to vote for me next year for the Pro Bowl next year!
