With all the attention focused on defensive stopper Ray Lewis, Jason Sehorn may be the underdog player of the game. AP |
CNNSI Host: Welcome to today's chat with CNNSI.com's NFL insider Pat Kirwan. Welcome, Pat. Thanks for join us.
Pat Kirwan: My pleasure to be here on my final day of five straight.
From Mike Kee in Dallas: Why is everyone talking about Ray Lewis, Trent Dilfer and Kerry Collins? Has everyone forgotten about Jason Sehorn? He is one of the best corners in the game and has class unlike others that I will not talk about at this time.
Pat Kirwan: I agree with you wholeheartedly. Not only is Jason a very good player and handles himself with class. But he will be one of the most important players in this game. I'm sure John Fox is counting on Jason to eliminate Qadry from the game. I also feel that the team that wins that game, must score from defense and that makes Jason even more important.
From Bears: Who do you think the Bears are going to draft and what are their needs?
Pat Kirwan: The Bears have many needs. A defensive back would be important for them. Maybe another running back. I've heard the name Jamar Fletcher and corner from Wisconsin and a running back I particularly like, LaDanian Tomlinson from TCU. But there's a long way to go before the draft.
From Mark in Atlanta: Are you personally tired of all the Super Bowl hype?
Pat Kirwan: There is a lot of hype and I am tired but I am not tired of the NFL Super Bowl experience. I sat in on Bill Parcell's press conference today where he reflected on Super Bowls 18 and 25 and he was terrific. I do get a chance to see a lot of my old friends from the league and that is enjoyable. Above and beyond that, I think this will be a terrific football game.
From Tyson Otte in Prairie du Chien, Wis.: Who do you think has the advantage in the Super Bowl, the Giants or the Ravens? Why?
Pat Kirwan: I like the Giants in a very close game because both teams have great defenses and will eventually force the QBs to have to perform. I think Kerry Collins has a better chance than Trent. Also, while at the Giants practice this week, they were loose and relaxed. And as Tom Flores, a former coach of the Raiders said today, 'The team with offensive momentum coming into this game, has a big advantage,' and 41 points against the Vikings gives the Giants that edge.
From Andrea in Toronto: Hey Pat, how many Super Bowls have you been to, and how many have to been to consecutively? Which was your favorite?
Pat Kirwan: I have now been to my eleventh straight. I really enjoyed the Pittsburgh-Dallas game in Arizona when the Steelers on-side kicked and almost got themselves a victory. I really like the Denver-Green Bay matchup when the Denver defense continuously blitzed Brett Farve and rattled him.
From Brett C. in Cincinnati: I'm a huge Browns fan and this waiting for a coach is killing me. What's the latest scoop and who is your early thought for their first round pick?
Pat Kirwan: I believe Marvin Lewis, from people I've spoken to close to the Browns organization, is the top candidate. They may lose him to Buffalo and if they do, they will sign John Fox. At least, that's what I've heard today.
From Matt: Does the fact that the media overdid the Ray Lewis story and said nothing about Giants starting DT Christian Peter's past show that they're lazy or hypocrites? Or both?
Pat Kirwan: I think the interest in the Ray Lewis situation has a lot to do with the fact that his problems surrounded last year's Super Bowl. And the severity of the crime. I also think they knew Ray would give answers that would make good reading and he accommodated them.
From Russ Irwin in St Louis: What do think the outcome would be if it were the Rams against the Ravens?
Pat Kirwan: Well, let's go back to last year's Super Bowl and the Rams had no intention of running the football against the Titans. They would come in versus the Ravens and throw 50 times, which I feel is the right way to play Baltimore. If you go back and look at the last regular season game this year for the Ravens, the Jets employed a similar offense to the Rams and had a 20-0 lead before they let Jermaine Lewis return two punts for touchdowns and two untimely interceptions. It's a good question and the Rams would have neutralized what Ray Lewis does best and that's stop the run.
From Tom Parisella in Moreno Valley, Calif.: Why don't the NY Giants spread out the offense more by passing to the tight end, like to Pete Mitchell?
Pat Kirwan: That's a terrific question and I believe that they are going to spread the offense out against Baltimore and when you look at the successful passing game against the Ravens on first downs, the tight end is a very important person. Look for spread sets and the ball going to Pete in those situations.
CNNSI Host: That's all the time we have today with CNNSI.com's NFL insider Pat Kirwan. Thanks for all your time this week and all season, Pat. Enjoy the game!!
Pat Kirwan: It's been a pleasure answering your questions this week and I'll enjoy this game this Sunday because I love defense.
