Reactions: Jackie Stiles Stopping the scoring machine not an easy taskPosted: Monday March 26, 2001 5:32 PMUpdated: Tuesday March 27, 2001 8:01 AM Southwest Missouri State's Jackie Stiles, the NCAA career scoring leader, scored 41 points in the Sweet Sixteen to propel the Bears past No. 1 seed Duke. She scored 32 against Rutgers' famous defense in the second round. Toledo held her to 13 in the first round, mainly because she was physically knocked out of the game with 10 minutes to play. No one seems able to guard her -- not even with double and triple teams. How would you stop Jackie Stiles? You don't, said most CNNSI.com users. A sample of the responses we received follows: In your dreams. Maybe the national media will wake up to the fact that someone else can play basketball besides Duke, UConn and Tennessee. Two of the best defenses in the tournament "held" Jackie to 73 points. Wake up!
I was at the game against Duke in Spokane last night and it looks to me like there is no way you can stop her.
You don't! You just hope she has an off-night and only gets 20 or so points. The Duke game was the first game this year shown nationally. America is just now seeing what the Mo. Valley has been dealing with for four years. She is the REAL DEAL! Springfield, Mo., is the best women's basketball venue in America. Compare the numbers with all the great players and Jackie wins hands down. The best women's college basketball player in America!
Clearly, Toledo's' method of limiting Stiles point production was the most effective. The only way to stop her is to take her out!
You don't. You just sit back and watch. WOW! She is the most exciting player in women's basketball today. Could really help the WNBA.
Control her offense with your offense. Slow the game down. Walk the ball up court, run through all of your options on offense, and when you finally shoot the ball, send at LEAST three back immediately to stop the break. No shots with more than 10 seconds left on the shot clock except layups. Jackie works so hard to get the ball that you're not likely to limit her touches on her offensive end, so you use the above strategy to disrupt her rhythm by making the game shorter (fewer possessions and touches) and by eliminating transition buckets. Defensively, the only thing I can think of is to pack the zone in tightly, and take your chances on the three-pointer. I would do this because SMS doesn't really look to shoot the three that often, though their percentage is quite good.
YOU DON'T! I must admit that even living in Springfield, the home of SMS, I didn't really know much about Jackie until this year. If I only would have known what I was missing! I am continually amazed by her level of play and her ability to step up and lead the team to victory. I think the only way to stop her would be if you didn't have to play her at all. She can go up against anyone and find ways to come out on top. Go Bears!
The ONLY way to stop Jackie: Nail her hotel room door shut. Otherwise, you're not going to the next round.
I think you just have to guard Jackie with a man. I don't think there's a woman player (college) in the country that can stick with Stiles one on one. She has natural talent with a work ethic that would shame virtually all of us. She just wants it more. You can't stop her, just hope she has an off night. If she stays hot, SMS could win the national title. Wouldn't that shake up the establishment!
Force her to play in the men's NBA, but come to think of it, that might not work either.
The only way to stop Jackie is for her not to be on the court. How do you do that? No, not by injuring her, but by constantly crying to the officials until they start swaying their calls to go against Jackie. Foul trouble is the only way.
Steal her shoes just before game time. If that doesn't work, pound her early and relentlessly even though she will eventually make the free throws given. I've watched her for four years. The only thing that can stop her is a concussion or a violent act of nature. Good bye, Washington. Hello, Final Four.
The best way to stop Jackie Stiles would clearly be schedule your game against Southwest Missouri State while Jackie is vacationing in Australia.
How do you stop Jackie Stiles? You simply don't. She's incredible, and her team, the SMS Lady Bears, is too. So, I think that Stiles, along with the Lady Bears, are the team to watch. No one expects them to win, and they keep winning.
If you could hypnotize her so that she thinks she is a chicken, you could probably hold her to 25.
