Reactions: Champions League Baddoo's Bayern Munich users' choice for championPosted: Tuesday May 22, 2001 6:37 PMUpdated: Tuesday May 22, 2001 6:37 PM Terry Baddoo and Phil Jones went Head-to-Head on the Champions League finalists, with Baddoo arguing Bayern Munich's case and Jones backing Valencia for the cup. Most users sided with Baddoo's points. A sample of the responses we received follows: While both Terry and Phil make great arguments on behalf of both Bayern and Valencia, respectively, I feel that Phil is on the money because Valencia losing by three goals to nil, the memory from last year's final will still be fresh in their minds. Also, I personally want to see them win because Bayern knocked out my beloved Real.
Following their "miracle" win in the League, I reckon Bayern is going to gain themselves another honour by lifting the Champions League Cup in the final minutes of the game. They should have won it two years ago (when MU snapped away). This is their turn to lift the cup.
I think terry is on the mark. Having beaten both Man U and Real in previous rounds, it's really hard to go against Bayern. It would be hard to argue that Valencia is a better team than both Man U and Real, but there will be no more than a goal in it.
I think Terry is on the mark exactly as Bayern have been solid and consistent in the champions league (unlike in the Bundesliga) when Bayern played constructive football it always gives them the edge. So I predict Bayern Munich. And lets be fair -- they deserve it more than any other team.
Terry is definitely my man because Bayern is gonna make it this year! No compromise! They just deserve it, especially after that unbelievable final in 1999...Valencia is without doubt a good team, but they had the easier opponents during that CL season. Sorry Valencia, but it's only second spot again!
Terry has a much stronger case based on fact rather than esthetics. Bayern will prove much more solid all around and in Elber will have an unstoppable force that will net them the trophy. They will have deserved it too if they make it.
Bravo Terry. Surely the guy is on the mark. Bayern has waited for so long and I think this is its time. The team has all the departments functioning and working together. If these were cars we would say the Germans have introduced a new model (Bayern) on the winning streak. Valencia has no chance.
Basically, I also believe Valencia will win but for other reasons. First of all, Bayern has lost Jeremies to injury. Secondly, Bayern will be exhausted from beer celebrations after winning the Bundesliga at the last second and will be overconfident against underdog Valencia. Finally, Hector Cuper, the Valencia skipper, has lost all the European finals he has coached: it's about time he wins his first!
It's obvious who's going to win, it is Bayern. Bayern has the best goalie on the planet, one of the toughest defenses and great midfield talent. They got the full package. I say Bayern will win 2-0. Terry, I heavily agree with you.
Wow... these two teams really prove that defense wins big games! Although neither team plays beautiful attacking football, Bayern and Valencia both have suffocating defense that produce surpassingly quick counterattacks. I think the edge goes to Bayern because of Elber. Give this guy once chance you get one goal. 1-0 Bayern wins!
Well, according to me Bayern Munchen are the overwhelming favorites to win the trophy, as they have beaten both Manchester United and Real Madrid in the quarters and semis, respectively, without losing a single game. But, on the other hand, Valencia has shown glimpse of the kind of football played by Manchester United in 1999 when they won the trophy. They totally outclassed Leeds United in their previous match and they do look like having the potential to beat Bayern Munchen with their accurate passing game and superb teamwork. I'm on Valencia's side for this one. Lets hope for the best!
Terry's on cue. Bayern's midfield is too strong for Valencia and will snuffle any creativity as they did with Real. In Effenberg they have a true maestro who needs no motivation. Lizarazu is probably one of the best left backs and should take care of Mendieta's menace.
On this case I'll have to agree wholeheartedly with Terry Badoo. I think that Bayern Munich have proved time and time again that they are well worth their position among the Europe elite. They have been the most consistent out of all the teams in the past three years (reaching two finals and the semi final last year). In the last four matches (two versus Man United (my club) in the quarterfinals and two versus Real Madrid) they managed to limit each club to only scoring one goal, which in my point of view, is a huge achievement on its own. The likes of Kahn, Kuffour, P. Andersson and Lizarazu have been playing their hearts out in defense while in attack Giovanni Elber seems to be on song. And now with the return of the superb Effenberg it will make Bayern even more formidable. I predict a hard fought battle with Bayern edging it 1 or 2-0.
Unfortunately, no matter who wins the Champions League final, dull counter-attacking football has won out in the end. Both Bayern and Valencia over rely on their defense and suffocating tactics to win games. Even if this match was the most exciting ever played, the way both teams got to the final has been utterly boring. A prediction on who wins the match? Probably Bayern. They are the masters of this type of game!
